Uh oh. 2014 Predictions. This is a bad sign. Out of 27 previous predictions, only 2 have been right.

If you want to sign up, registration and other bits of information are here.

Break that trend Charles! Evo sweep again this year? ;)

How on earth do they predict Warren 3rd in Modified AWD? Hasn't he won the last 3 years in a row?

Warren is one of the predictors. He doesn't want to jinx himself.

I had planned on going this year, but we spent too much on our cross-country road trip last month. Keep us updated on here! Don't forget pics for the homepage! Individual shots and a group shot like last year would be awesome!

I haven't seen the official results yet, but...

Warren Elliott won his 5th Modified AWD Championship in his Evo IX!!!! Congrats!

Charles Wright won 1st in Stock AWD and his son took 3rd!!! Is that 3 in a row Charles?

I'm looking forward to hearing how the event went from the guys that were there!

Here's my story.....
My son co-drove the Evo with me in SA. I know ZB in the STi is fast as well as Jon in the automatic WRX. With the 8" of rain on the site in the days preceding I was really concerned about the available traction. Friday was overcast but the the wind blew and dried the surface considerably. On Friday evening we do class inspection and also draw for our run order. I draw 4. I'm getting used to these low number starts. My son will start towards the back.

Stock runs first but the AWD class is preceded by FWD and RWD. I know the ground is soft but I decide to give my 1st run the full blown launch treatment. I'm glad I did because the car leaves like a rocket. Game on!! I run the course in 1st and 2nd gear. The time is quick but is matched by the STi. My son makes his run and he shows the field that he's the boss. I got out of rhythm and went slower on my 2nd run. The STi went quicker as did my son. On our 3rd runs, the 3 of us pretty much matched times. My son is leading and I'm in 3rd. The STi is 2nd. Also hanging around and setting fast times is the automatic WRX.

I'm the course designer for the 2nd course and it turns out to be slightly slower than the 1st. We reverse the run order and make 2 runs on the new course. I make up time to move to 2nd and my son is leading the way. The STi is right there though. The automatic WRX though is done. His brother turned it into a turtle during the Prepared class runs.

During all the fun we're having the courses are taking a severe beating. The ground is soft and simply does not hold up to the relentless assault of the cars. The courses get rutted and become very bumpy. Course changes and repairs are frequent which delays the event. The Modified class does not make it's Saturday afternoon runs till Sunday morning.

The course change for the Sunday course occurs quickly but time constraints do not allow for a course walk. Now we're running in the order that we finished on Saturday. That means my son is 1st and I get in line as soon as possible when he gets back. That means I get to watch the fast guys make their runs. Unfortunately my son is one of the 7 (of 17 SA drivers) who misses the "invisible" gate. He doesn't even know it till it shows up on livetiming. The STi is fast but my run is quite a bit quicker. My son makes a mess of his last run picking up 3 cones. The STi is fast again. I've got a cushion though. I've been here before and screwed up. I decide the only way I can lose is if I hit cones. So I lay off of them. Go fast where possible, make sure I make all the gates and slow down such that I don't get thrown into the cones. I cross the finish line clean and just 0.4 seconds off of the STi time. Objective met.

I've captured my 2nd Championship. It's bittersweet though. I would have absolutely loved to finish 2nd to my son. As it was, even though he was very quick, he gifted me the win. So we wind up 1-3.

With the rough courses that we had, I was very glad I had built a skid plate for the car. Without it, there would have been no way that we could have pushed as hard as we did. We still did lose some paint from the front fascia but all the parts stayed on. The Evo is an amazing car in the dirt.
