Default Hello from northern michigan

Howdy. My name is Mark and I am the new owner of a very seasoned dsm rally car. I bought it two years ago and finally got it together enough to race my first rally a few weeks ago(magnum opus rally). The car is a 94 gsx shell. We bought it without the motor. I found a rough non turbo motor and freshened it up with bearings and rings and no surprise it is weak as a kitten. But we had fun and finished....7/8ths of the rally. We had a blast and are planning for our next rally. I am always looking for tech info and parts sources.

Welcome to the site Mark! I love seeing 1g's rallied and yours looks great! So it's non-turbo, AWD right now? What event are you planning on doing next?

Yep. We are running non turbo so we can run LSPR and Sno*Drift as rookies in open light. We are planning on running LSPR this year and S*D in 16 and Magnum Opus after that.

The motor is bone stock at the moment. I might throw some cams at it but that is about all I can think of doing to it while it is N/A. I think I'm going to start putting a turbo motor together in the mean time.

We had two miles on the car before we unloaded at MO and I was amazed at how nimble the car was at speed(what little speed we had) and before the end of the weekend we had posted some respectable times. We ran sans skid plate due to not having time to mod it to fit around our exhaust. This meant the exhaust became the sacrifial part of the car. We knocked it off and bent the carrier bearings on the third stage of the rally when we center punched a large rock on the rutted trail. Then the throttle started hanging up. We fought that problem all day Saturday till on the last stage it was hanging up every time we let off the go pedal. After zinging the motor a few times I decided to pull the plug before we broke the something. I've driven the car since and it still feels really solid and stout. Just a few things to fix.
