Thompson Racing Fabrication
Who is the owner?
Ryan Thompson
When did the business start?
March 2007
How many employees do you currently have? What are their roles or specialties?
Tim and Mike are my main help, Tim specializes in fabricating projects, and Mike helps at lot with mechanical work.
Outside of the shop, I spend a lot of time with the Flying Moose Rally team, and their Volvo 242 G2 Rally car. That team wouldn't be where it is today without my service crew: Genevieve, Andrew, Richelle, Alvan, Tyler, and Eric.
Has the business changed any since you started it?
Without question. I am first and foremost a fabricator, my greatest strength is a deep understanding of motorsports, and ability to achieve premium performance from any vehicle. That left me very much to learn with respect to operating a successful business. The growth and advancement we have been so fortunate to experience has taught me so much about business, marketing, and product development. As I learn more and more, we're always tweaking our plans and directions. Without loosing sight of the quality and customer service that has driven TRF to become what it has already.
What do you currently drive?
My wife and I share 4 vehicles: 1992 Galant VR-4. Nearly showroom condition, driven occasionally. 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer OZ, Rally Cross/Daily driver. 2005 Jeep Liberty Renegade, 6 speed manual, off road package. 2005 Dodge ram 2500, H.O. Cummins turbo diesel with 6 speed manual.
What product/build are you most proud of OR What has been your most challenging product/build?
The range of our product offering is so vast, I don't think I can point out any single project. I'm always most proud of projects that present new challenges. We get bored doing the same thing every day.
Future plans for the business?
I hope to grow TRF into a predominant performance fabrication business. Have a dedicated shop location, a small staff, drawing business from all over North America. All while staying small enough that we never stray from the quality and attention to detail that has made us what we are today.
Best part about doing what you do?
Every day is a new challenge, or a new project. There's always something to be proud of when we're finished. Nothing leaves here unless we're happy with it, and we're proud to say "we built that".
Worst part about doing what you do?
Being part of projects that I don't think will achieve the customers expectations. Some lessons just have to be learned the hard way, I know, I've learned a lot that way myself. It's still difficult to stand by, and watch a project progress that just isn't going to turn out the way it's owner hopes it will. All while knowing that interfering isn't going to help the outcome either.
Why Rally?
Rally is in my opinion, one of the very most extreme motorsports. Some racing is a challenge mainly of cars, others racing mainly leverages driver against driver. Rally takes both a very high performing car and talented driver to compete and be competitive .
The overall rush for the entire team from driver, navigator, to crew just can not be beat if you ask me.
